Thursday evening a few of us met to begin a conversation about Lent and, along with the community at large, to consider the question of the cost of following Christ. Over the next few weeks we will be following along with Bruce and the rest of the MBCC folks as we walk through this season of Lent. We began our gatheing with this meditation from Frederick Buechner:
"In many cultures there is an ancient custom of giving a tenth of each year's income to some holy use. For Christians to observe the forty days of Lent is to do the same thing with roughly a tenth of the year's days. After being baptized by John in the river Jordan, Jesus went off alone into the wilderness where he spent forty days asking himself the question what it meant to be Jesus. During Lent, Christians are supposed to ask one way or another what it means to be themselves."
During the course of this season, we will be considering what it means to be ourselves, who we are, and who we are becoming. This is an open group; any and all are welcome to join us. Lisa Rode has graciously opened her new home to us, so this is also a way for us, as a community, to celebrate this blessing for her. We're in the Inner Sunset, so this is a perfect fellowship opportunity for those of you on the west side of the City. If you are unable to join us, I would ask for your prayers for those of us that are gathering. Thanks, and we'll see you next Thursday!
