3... 2... 1... Blast Off!

Wow, it's finally here -- MBCC's own food pantry. Over nine months ago, our small group, the "Not-so-serious" Bible Study group, met up at a restaurant in the Sunset to discuss what we would study next. We decided to focus on a particular topic -- the poor, and went from there, and God led us to organize a couple of outreach events with the church.

One of these was at the SF Food Bank, which was down the street from our church's previous 1040 Mariposa location. After our trip to the SF Food Bank, we calculated how much value we had added, and it amounted to less than minimum wage per man- and woman-hour we worked; folks enjoyed serving together, but we wanted to do something more. In our discussions around Bible passages, God moved us to serve the working poor. In particular, we saw a need for fresh, healthy food.

One of our members talked about a book she read as part of an MBCC book group, Eat This Bread by Sara Miles, one of the founders of the food pantry at St. Gregory’s that started so many others in this city. Another member talked about how his home church gave out food to people, and for some time I had wanted to do something for the poor and to serve alongside friends. It became clear to us that we were not only supposed to meet peoples’ physical needs; we needed to expand our community.

Thus, we decided to start a food pantry at our church. We then met with Sara Miles at St. Gregory’s to learn how to start one. We pitched the idea to the whole church before the move and to our new partners in ministry at Ocean Avenue and found much enthusiasm. We went through the paperwork to apply for support from the SF Food bank, and received it – they saw a great need for a new food pantry in the Excelsior community. Sara encouraged us to share what we like about church to our community, and so we hope to create a welcoming café space where folks can be in community before picking up groceries. We’d like to thank the church for supporting us in this ministry, and hope that you will continue to support this ministry with your gifts of prayer, time, talent, and finances. We hope that we’ll see you at 32 Ocean Ave. on a 3^rd Saturday of the month sometime soon!

Congregational Meeting THIS Sunday, March 15, 2009

Every year as a congregation in the Presbyterian Church (USA) we are required to gather together as a congregation in order to conduct some of the business of the church and corporation.  This year will mark our first such meeting.  We are still getting all of the legal and administrative pegs in place, but feel like we are ready to have this meeting regarding the budget and pastoral compensation.

While we will always embrace MBCC's style of open conversation and dialogue, official fiscal and corporate decisions are voted on by official Active Members of the church.  So, if you have officially joined MBCC, it is important for you to be here and be part of the discussion and vote.

Yes, this all does seem rather institutional, but as you know we are a church that hopes to have a long life of positive ministry here in the Excelsior, so developing appropriate structures are important.  This is just one part of our development and we promise, the MBCC flavor will still be evident.

District 11 SF Supervisor John Avalos to hold first Town Hall Meeting

As a local organization in the Excelsior District, we are helping to get the word out for John Avalos and his first Town Hall as District 11 Supervisor.  Here is the letter he sent to the community!  Hope you can make it.

Dear Neighbor,

I am honored to invite you to participate in my first town hall meeting as your new supervisor.

The horrific homicides that took place last summer undeniably shook our communities. However, the enduring spirit of District 11 residents shined through as we came together to discuss how to work collectively on addressing the root causes of violence and work towards a safer neighborhood.

This town hall is the third in a series of community initiated meetings focused on constructive solutions to public safety in District 11. The previous meetings’ successes have been due largely to the incredible commitment that our residents have had in being involved with the process.

I am excited about this town hall because it will allow us to get updates from City agencies and also to hear directly from the youth in our neighborhood. We also hope to generate new ideas on how to create a community-based safety plan that prevents violence and brings us closer to our desire for safe streets.
